Rosebery is one of Sydney's fast-changing inner-south suburbs — an old industrial pocket where red-brick warehouses now hold cafes and studios, standing alongside new apartment blocks. It sits right next to Green Square, a short way south of the CBD, and in recent years it has filled up with students and young professionals drawn to that mix of fresh buildings, converted factories and a genuinely good cafe scene. If you want somewhere that feels new and a little creative without being in the thick of the city, Rosebery is an easy suburb to settle into.
Because the suburb has changed so fast, what comes up to rent is a real mix — a room in a brand-new apartment, a converted-warehouse share with high ceilings and big windows, or a place in an older walk-up on one of the quieter streets. Rooms open up through the year as leases turn over and new buildings fill, so it pays to start early and keep checking back. On Zuwu you can read every Rosebery listing and message the host in your own language before you fly out, then line up an inspection for your first week — and because every host verifies an Australian mobile number before a listing can go live, there's a real person behind each room.
Every host verifies an Australian mobile before a room goes live, and a listing's address stays private until you book an inspection.
Rosebery works well in two directions at once. For UNSW, it's a short bus ride east towards the Kensington campus — services run along the suburb's main roads, so you can reach a morning lecture without a long trip. For the city, Green Square station is close at hand, with the train dropping you at Central and the CBD in just a few minutes and easy changes there for the rest of Sydney's network. Between the buses to campus and the train into town, Rosebery keeps both your university and the city centre within comfortable reach — which is a big part of why students who split their time between the two end up here.
Rosebery has changed quickly for an inner-south suburb, and its residents reflect how recent that shift is. At the 2021 Census the largest group had European ancestry (around 45%), alongside an established East Asian community (about 17%) and a notable Oceanian population (around 14%). In practice that's a young, varied crowd — students, renters and young professionals who arrived as the old factories were turned into apartments and cafes — so, as a new international student, you'll be in good company among people still learning their way around this part of Sydney. If Rosebery itself is full when you're looking, neighbouring Zetland, Mascot and Alexandria draw a similar mix.
