Mascot is one of Sydney's newer apartment suburbs — a cluster of modern buildings that has grown up beside the airport and the fast-changing Green Square precinct. For international students, that newness is much of the appeal: most of the rooms and share houses here sit in recent apartment blocks rather than older terraces or weatherboard houses, so they tend to feel easy to move into while you find your feet in a new city. Because Mascot grew around the train line rather than an old village centre, it feels practical and well-connected rather than quaint — a suburb built for getting around.
What really makes Mascot work for students is its position. The T8 line drops you into the city in about twelve minutes, the airport is a single stop away for trips home, and buses run across toward the UNSW side of town. Rooms here tend to be better priced than the inner-city suburbs just across Central, so plenty of students use Mascot as a well-connected base and let the trains do the rest. On Zuwu you can read every Mascot listing and message the host in your own language before you even fly out, so you can line up a place — or at least a shortlist — while you're still overseas.
Mascot station sits on the T8 Airport & South line, which runs straight into the city — Central and the CBD are only about twelve minutes away, and you can change there for other trains or the light rail. UNSW isn't on the train line itself, so most students take a bus across toward the campus in Kensington. The airport, meanwhile, is literally one stop in the other direction, which makes end-of-semester trips home refreshingly simple.
Mascot has the feel of a brand-new neighbourhood still finding its rhythm. The 2021 Census recorded a genuinely mixed community — around a third of residents report European ancestry and close to a quarter East Asian — and you'll notice that blend in the cafes along Coward Street and the shops around Green Square. It's a transient, transport-focused place where many people are renters and recent arrivals, which makes it an easy, unintimidating spot to land as an international student.

Every host verifies an Australian mobile before a room goes live, and a listing's address stays private until you book an inspection.
