Epping is one of northern Sydney's great connectors — a busy town centre built around a station where the Metro and the Northern train line meet. That junction is the whole reason students land here: Macquarie University is only a few minutes up the Metro line, so you can roll out of bed and be in a lecture without a long trip, while fast trains still run south into the city for work or a weekend out. Around the station, newer apartment towers have gone up alongside the older brick houses on the leafy streets behind, so you get a real choice between a modern unit and a room in a quieter family home.
The town centre has a large East Asian community, and the shops along Rawson Street and Beecroft Road are full of Chinese and other Asian groceries, bakeries and casual eateries — handy when you want familiar food or to sort out the basics in your own language in your first week. Most student housing here is a room in one of the apartment blocks near the station or a spare room in a house a short walk out, and because Epping is popular and so well-connected, good rooms don't tend to linger. On Zuwu you can read every Epping listing and message the host in your own language before you fly out, every host verifies an Australian mobile number before a room goes live, and a listing's exact address stays private until you book an inspection.

Epping is a major interchange, and that's its biggest draw for Macquarie students. On the Metro, Macquarie University is the very next stop — a couple of minutes on a driverless train that turns up every few minutes, so there's no timetable to memorise and no changing lines. The same station sits on the Northern train line, giving you fast trains south into the city centre whenever you need them, plus easy connections when a part-time job or a weekend out takes you further afield. For getting to class and getting around Sydney, few suburbs this far from the CBD are this well-connected.
Epping has a large and long-established East Asian community: at the 2021 Census about 44% of residents reported East Asian ancestry, alongside a substantial European community of around 23% and a smaller Oceanian group near 10%. You'll hear that in the languages on the main street and see it in the in-language shops and services around the station, and it's part of why the suburb feels so easy for students arriving from the region. It's a settled, family-oriented town centre rather than a party strip, with plenty of professionals and families alongside the students — a comfortable, unintimidating place to begin life in Sydney.
