Burwood is the shopping-and-food heart of Sydney's inner west — a dense, walkable town centre built around Burwood Westfield and the streets fanning out from the station. If you want a neighbourhood where everyday life already happens in your own language, it's one of the most comfortable places in Sydney to land. Chinese and Taiwanese kitchens, hotpot and dumpling spots, Asian grocers and bubble-tea counters are packed in tight, so your first grocery run, phone top-up or late dinner rarely means puzzling through English before you're ready.
What really sets Burwood apart from the Asian food hubs further out is its place on the railway. It's a major stop on the main western line, with fast trains running straight into Central — the hub that puts the University of Sydney, UTS and the whole CBD within reach — so from Burwood two universities and the city all sit on one quick ride. Most of what comes up here is a room in an apartment block near the station or a share house a few streets back, and the best ones are taken quickly. On Zuwu you can read every Burwood listing and message hosts in your own language before you fly out, every host verifies an Australian mobile number before a listing goes live, and a listing's exact address stays private until you book an inspection.

Burwood makes getting to class easy. Trains on the main western line are frequent — including express services that skip the smaller stops — so Central is only about 15 to 20 minutes away. UTS sits right beside Central, the University of Sydney is a short walk or bus ride further on, and the same trip drops you in the middle of the city for a part-time job or a weekend out. Because so many lines meet at Central, you can change there for almost anywhere else in Sydney, so one quick ride opens up the whole network.
Burwood is one of the inner west's great East Asian hubs, and the 2021 Census bears that out: close to half its residents (around 48%) reported East Asian ancestry, alongside a sizeable European community (about 20%) and a smaller Oceanian group (around 6%). You feel that balance as soon as you come up from the platform — the Westfield food court busy at lunchtime, grocers stacked with imported snacks, and a weekend crowd that fills the whole town centre. A lot of students settle in here quickly, simply because so much of daily life already runs in a language they know. And if nothing in Burwood itself fits, Strathfield, Croydon and Concord sit close by and draw a similar crowd.
